South Pass at Port Eads

The Hubbell Library
225 Morgan Street
New Orleans, Louisiana (Algiers)

(The Hubbell Library is in the Carriage House behind the Algiers Courthouse)

Matthew D. White’s photographic exhibit, The Louisiana Coast, featuring images from Cameron Parish Louisiana to the Lower Mississippi River Delta from Port Sulphur in Plaquemines Parish south to the end of the three passes that drain into the Gulf of Mexico, is showing at The Hubbell Library in Algiers, Louisiana from now until the end of January, 2012. Photography for this project begin in the spring of 2000, shot alternatively on black and white film and in color digital and has continued to the present day. The exhibit features rare photographs of coastal landmarks, landscapes, and waterways seldom seen by outsiders including the Sabine Pass Lighthouse; Pilottown, Louisiana – the last manned outpost on the Mississippi River and the historic home of the Bar Pilots; and Cheniere au Tigre, a remote, romantic island nestled off the southernmost coast of Vermilion Parish.

The goal of this photographic collection is to inspire an appreciation for the beauty of this unique and spellbinding region and to encourage the documentation and preservation of these images for future generations. The exhibit is a satellite project of Prospect New Orleans, one of the leading biennials of international contemporary art in the United States and is also held in conjunction with PhotoNOLA, an annual festival of photography in New Orleans, coordinated by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with galleries, museums and photographers citywide.

The Hubbell Library is New Orleans’ oldest public library, a Carnegie library built in 1907. The building survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005 with barely a scratch and re-opened shortly afterwards, but was closed again in May 2008 for structural repairs. The library is temporarily located in the carriage house at 225 Morgan Street, behind the Algiers Courthouse, pending funding for the renovations.  While the exhibit is in progress, a percentage of the sales of prints from Matthew White’s collection of Louisiana Coast images will be donated to support funding for renovations to the library.
